June is heating up and continues to bring lots of opportunities to learn together , tap into resources for artists and organizations, and look back at all the cultural community has overcome in the past fiscal year (2020-2021).

SJCA has a special reason to be a bit nostalgic this week, as we are preparing for the departure of our current Executive Director, Karen Pinzolo! After working in the cultural field for almost 50 years, Karen is ready to retire, relax, and travel. Although we are all a bit jealous, we wish her all the best in her new adventures. Read her full farewell letter in the "Team Updates" section below.

Read on for more updates, resources, and application deadlines, etc. Visit SJCA.net for even more resources, webinars from across the field, and useful tools to support the vital work you do.

Don't be shy! We want to hear from you too. Keep us up to date on what you're working on, who you're working with, and how we can help.  We are still working remotely, but we can always be reached by leaving a message at  (609) 626-3630 or email at jhain@sjca.net. Have a great week!

Information below provided by Americans for the Arts Arts Action Fund Update 06/17/21

Shuttered Venue Operators Grants (SVOG) Updates:
  • SBA will complete the award process on 10,000 applications (all of Priority 1 & 2) before July 4th
  • All remaining SVOG applications (including priority 3) will be processed no later than mid-July
  • SBA will now disburse the awards in one lump sum, instead of multiple tranches.
  • SBA has confirmed that all ELIGIBLE applicants in Priority 1, 2, 3, and Supplemental will be funded. There are ample funds still remaining.
  • There is no specific deadline for applying. It’s until funds run out. It’s highly recommended to apply by early July.
  • More than 1,800 applicants have not yet completed their SAM.gov application, which is very important to receive your SVOG funds into your checking account. Please make sure you’ve hit the “SUBMIT” button.
  • Once you receive your funds, you will be able to pay for costs incurred retroactively from 3/1/20 through the end of this year 12/31/21, as laid out in your proposed budget. You will be able to pay only those costs incurred by 12/31/21 for up to a year after receiving the disbursed funds into your checking account. For those receiving Supplemental grants, everything will be extended by an additional 6 months.
Please email artsactionfund@artsusa.org with  issues, questions, or problems.

Dear Members and Friends,

I will be stepping down as Executive Director as of June 30th but working on a part-time basis until the end of the summer to help with the transition.

I chose this time for my departure because I feel SJCA is at a turning point. It has gained the respect of funders as well as support from the broader field. In addition, we are back on our feet financially after Covid because of access to Covid relief funds and a shiny new Strategic Plan.

am proud of what I have accomplished, bringing the SJCA office into the 21st century and making our organization relevant again. I could not have accomplished this without a board that was willing to lead and open to change o r partners who understood the value of our new direction and believed in us. It is time to pass the torch to the next generation of leadership and create a space for our staff to grow and become more representative of the community it serves.

Julie Hain, SJCA’s current Associate Director, has been named Interim Director as of July 1st. I’m confident Julie is ready for the challenge after being promoted twice in two years. She also completed an Executive Program in Arts & Culture Strategy from the University of Pennsylvania to pair with her existing master’s in Humanities from the University of Chicago. Julie shines at SJCA and has had a heavy hand in all our achievements in the last two years. In an executive capacity, I have no doubt she, along with SJCA’s Transition Committee, will lead us through this leadership change successfully. You can reach Julie at jhain@sjca.net.

I am so grateful for the last five years in this position and all the inspiring and extraordinary people I have met. Please stay in touch (kpinzolo@gmail.com & cell: 908-358-6986). I will continue to support my incredible colleagues at SJCA and all those that support it in any way I can. It was a sincere privilege to work with all of you!
